Sock Materials - The Lowdown

Decisions, decisions.

Socks should be the last place you have decision fatigue, right? They're socks. How hard can it be to just pick a pair and pull them on? Turns out, it can really affect your day. Ever go on a hike or wear a new pair shoes for a day of shopping and realize the socks you grabbed are not helping your situation?

We have, too.

Let's breakdown the usual sock materials so you will know the pros and cons of each type.

Wool

Does wool make you feel like a sheep herder on a cold mountain top? It shouldn't. Wool will keep you warm, but it also keeps your feet dry. Wool wicks moisture from the skin, so it's actually a great choice for hiking, biking, and running. There are various weights of wool, so pick a light weight wool for the summer months.

Wool tends to be a bit more expensive, but it will help prevent blisters AND it's biodegradable.

Cotton

Cotton is such a versatile material. It's breathable, soft, and cool. It also retains moisture, so it may not be the best choice for heavy workouts or sweaty feet. The moisture can cause friction which in turn can cause blisters. Socks made of cotton are great for every day wear, though, especially in the summer months.

Of course, cotton is a natural, biodegradable material.

Polyester

Polyester is stronger and more durable than cotton or wool. It dries quickly and is not absorbent, so your feet will stay dry. Polyester also holds color better and is soft. Great for dress socks that you wear all day.

Rayon

Rayon is durable, breathable, and absorbent. It feels soft and silky. The combination of polyester and rayon is great for durability. The combo makes the material quick-drying and absorbent.

Nylon

Nylon is stretchy and strong. It also resists heat, mold, and mildew. It's a great addition to any of the above materials.

Spandex

Spandex is super stretchy and comfortable. It helps the socks keep their shape and mold to your feet.
